Show These to the Young Men In Your Life

Last Fall, I gave a DEI talk specifically for men. I am a proponent of the bell hooks “men are oppressed by the patriarchy too” style of feminism and I try to make that clear every time I write about the subject of gender. I worry for men, not just because men are dangerous and it’s in my interest as a woman to change them, but because I simply care about them. I see and know their struggle.

I’m not totally convinced that merely putting new ideas in front of their eyeballs will suddenly cause men to change. I know what worked for me—being in community with many women and gender-expansive people in my high school days—and this is no substitute for that face-to-face connection. However, if you have a young man or boy in your life—even kids as young as 10—I think it’s worthwhile to “get to them” before the Andrew Tates of the world do. Patriarchal ideas are omnipresent in our society (even women aspouse them), so the very least we can do is expose them to better ideas.
