Massachusetts: Testify in Favor of Sustainable After-Death Options!
Easy action item! (cw: death)
Hey, readers! Every now and again, something comes across my desk that I have to get out immediately. This is one of those things!
For those unaware, dying has a pretty big environmental impact. Whether you’re getting cremated in an energy-intensive oven or having your body pumped full of environmentally-hazardous embalming fluid, what happens to your body after you pass is going to have an impact on the planet. This is not to shame anybody for wanting their remains taken care of in a specific way! However, greener after-death options like natural organic reduction (composting your body) and alkaline hydrolysis (aka aquamation, a water-based, greener version of cremation) are currently not legal in the state of Massachusetts.
I, for one, want my body returned to the Earth after I die. In a way, it’s spiritually important to me. I care a lot about sustainability and minimizing my environmental impact, so this is my #1 pick for what to happen to my body after I die.
I know thinking about this stuff is grim, especially if you’re not as death positive as me. Still, if you live in Massachusetts, consider writing to congress about H2444, An Act expanding after-death care options. The bill adds aquamation and natural organic reduction to our list of legal death options. Specifically, you’ll be writing to the Public Health Committee. Consider this practice on getting involved with politics IRL!
Rep. Natalie Higgins has been leading the charge on this issue, and she emailed out full instructions last night to those who’ve emailed her office about the issue. Below are the full set of instructions on how to testify, as well as my own email testimony that you can use as a template.
Thanks for reading!

My Email Testimony
Good morning,
I am Dr. Anna Marie LaChance, a Massachusetts citizen living [address, phone #].
I am writing to express support for H2444, An Act expanding after-death care options. This bill would help citizens die in dignity in a way that is in accordance with our religious and spiritual values.
As a faculty in the Department of Chemical Engineering at UMass Amherst, I teach multiple courses on sustainability. Passing H2444 would be a win for sustainable death practices and would bring the great state of Massachusetts into the 21st century. Additionally, it is of great spiritual importance to me and many of my community members to be able to have our bodies returned to the Earth after we pass, making natural organic reduction a necessary legal after-death option in Massachusetts.
I urge you to please support H2444, An Act expanding after-death care options.
